We buy food because of its smell and appearance. When released at the right time, flavours are the reason why people chew chewing gum and love the beautiful taste of a fresh coffee. Flavours, colors and fats make biting into a vegetarian burger a juicy, beefy experience much alike biting into a real beef burger. Unfortunately, many of these ingredients are unstable leading to increased costs for manufacturers and negatively impacting the product quality. microPow encapsulates valuable ingredients enabling timed release and preservation, which allows to drastically reduce losses during production and adding value to end products. microPow powders can be tailored to a broad range of food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications, without relying on any added artificial ingredients. Coffee is a product that is consumed and loved around the globe. Consumers continue to ask for convenient instant mix cappuccino products, but do not want to compromise on quality. Instant coffee products still lack behind freshly brewed coffee in taste, since many of the volatile coffee flavours are lost during production and storage, leaving consumers with typically flat instant coffee.
All-natural microPow powders preserve volatile coffee flavours during storage and release the flavours when needed – during brewing at home. This makes the kitchen smell like the favorite coffee house, and the coffee taste like freshly brewed coffee.
Flavours are one of the main cost drivers in chewing gum production. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the flavour added to chewing gum during production is released while chewing. Moreover, true long-lasting flavours in chewing gum remain challenging, with flavours only lasting for few minutes.
microPow flavour powders enable an improved release of chewing gum flavour. Incorporating microPow powders into chewing gum enables cost-reductions for manufacturers while improving chewing gum for consumers.

microPow project officially kicked off based on the PhD theses of Lea and Pascal at the Laboratory of Food Process Engineering (Prof. Windhab) at ETH Zürich funded by an ETH Pioneer Fellowship.
